UK-Engineered Transformers Supporting Offshore Renewable Energy Systems

offshore

Custom-engineered power equipment continues to play a critical role in the expansion of offshore renewable energy infrastructure, where reliability, compact integration and operational resilience are essential. A recent UK-led project highlights how transformer design tailored to real-world marine conditions can support increasingly complex offshore systems.

Electro-Wind Limited has completed the design and manufacture of a series of custom transformers developed in collaboration with a UK-based system integrator and automation solution provider. The transformers will be installed within advanced power cabins forming part of a wider system supporting offshore renewable operations.

The units are intended for use in marine environments where spatial constraints and environmental exposure impose stringent engineering requirements. Designed for compact installation, the transformers operate with voltage configurations ranging from 690 V / 3.3 kV up to 690 V / 6.6 kV and are rated at 500 kVA. Their form factor allows integration into confined power cabin layouts without compromising accessibility or functionality.

Each transformer has been engineered specifically for offshore operating conditions, where moisture, temperature variation and continuous duty cycles place significant demands on electrical equipment. Standard features include high-performance fuses, voltage transformers (VTs), current transformers (CTs), and anti-condensation heaters to mitigate moisture-related risks. Transport and installation considerations have also been addressed through the inclusion of both fixed and swivel-mounted wheels.

Within the broader system architecture, the transformers are positioned on the back deck of installation vessels and form the central power element of self-contained power cabins. These cabins are designed to deliver stable and uninterrupted energy transfer to support offshore installation activities. The wider system will be used during the deployment of subsea power cables—critical infrastructure required for the expansion of offshore wind farms and other marine renewable projects.

Rather than representing a standalone equipment delivery, the project reflects a coordinated engineering approach involving transformer design, system integration and offshore operational requirements. It illustrates how standard electrical components often require significant adaptation to meet the demands of offshore renewable applications, where failure tolerance is low and maintenance access can be limited.

As offshore renewable energy projects continue to move further from shore and into more challenging environments, the importance of purpose-designed electrical infrastructure is increasing. Projects of this nature demonstrate the role of UK-based engineering and manufacturing capability in addressing those challenges through tailored design and close collaboration across the supply chain.

Further project updates are expected as the system progresses toward full deployment. For engineers and system designers working in offshore renewables, the initiative provides a practical example of how application-specific transformer design contributes to reliability, safety and performance in complex marine energy systems.
