Industry Milestone Achieved with IEC 62443-4-2 Cybersecurity Certification for Variable Frequency Drives

Rockwell Automation has achieved a significant industry milestone by obtaining the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62443-4-2 Security Level Capability 1 certification from TÜV Rheinland, a globally respected and independent certification body. This prestigious accreditation recognises the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 755T-series and PowerFlex 6000T drives for their compliance with the rigorous cybersecurity standards outlined in IEC 62443-4-2.
Part of the broader ISA/IEC 62443 series, the IEC 62443-4-2 standard focuses on enhancing security within industrial automation and control systems. This certification underscores the resilience of Rockwell Automation’s drive families against cyber threats, reinforcing their ability to safeguard industrial environments from unauthorised access and potential cyberattacks.
The certification process entailed a meticulous evaluation of the drives’ design and development lifecycle, ensuring cybersecurity measures were embedded at every stage. This rigorous approach incorporated threat modelling, secure coding practices, and security-focused testing to proactively identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.
“The PowerFlex 755T-series low-voltage drives and 6000T medium-voltage drives are engineered to support the evolving demands of modern industrial operations, which are increasingly interconnected and require advanced cybersecurity protections,” said Manju Venugopal, Product Security Leader at Rockwell Automation.
As a leader in industrial cybersecurity, Rockwell Automation has consistently set new standards for safeguarding automation systems. Notable achievements in recent years include:
- Attaining Maturity Level 4—the highest level—of the globally recognised IEC 62443-4-1 industrial cybersecurity certification for its secure development lifecycle, independently certified by TÜV Rheinland.
- Introducing the world’s first programmable automation controller to achieve IEC 62443-4-2 compliance, as certified by TÜV Rheinland.
- Deploying ODVA CIP Security-enabled systems for enhanced plant floor security.
- Becoming a founding member of the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance.
- Securing IEC 62443-3-3 Process Certification from TÜV Rheinland.
- Achieving ISO 27001 Certification for remote support through the Standards Institute of Israel.
