ABB has been selected to provide advanced automation, electrical, and digital solutions for ADNOC’s Ruwais LNG facility, located about 230km west of Abu Dhabi. Once operational, it will be the region’s first all-electric liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, using electric-driven motors instead of conventional gas turbines¹.

Under the contract, awarded by TJN, an engineering, procurement, and construction joint venture comprising Technip Energies, JGC Corporation, and NMDC Group, ABB will deliver its microcontroller-based Electrical Control and Monitoring (ECM) system, a module of the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system. The ECM system is designed to enhance operational efficiency and safety by providing real-time visibility and control of all electrical assets.

ABB said the technology will enable rapid fault detection, load optimisation, and power management to be achieved safely and reliably, while reducing downtime.

By replacing gas turbines with electric motors for its two liquefaction trains, the Ruwais LNG project is expected to support emissions-reduction efforts. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electrifying existing LNG terminals—and powering them with low-emissions electricity—could cut greenhouse gas emissions from production by about 60 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent per year².

Global LNG supply has expanded faster than overall natural gas demand in recent years, a trend expected to continue as nearly 300 billion cubic meters of new annual LNG capacity is added between 2025 and 2030³.

“Electrification unlocks the full potential of LNG as a transition fuel to support decarbonisation efforts and meet growing energy demands by providing reliable, abundant and affordable natural gas around the world,” said Bjarte Pedersen, Senior Vice President IMEA at ABB’s Energy Industries division. “By improving operational efficiency, preventing fault downtime and optimising distribution, ABB’s ECM system safeguards production and extends asset life and we are pleased to support ADNOC’s Ruwais LNG facility with our integrated solutions.”

As the first all-electric LNG facility in the Middle East, the Ruwais plant marks a key milestone in ADNOC’s digital transformation strategy. By integrating ABB’s advanced ECM system with ADNOC’s AI-driven analytics, the plant will gain real-time insights, predictive maintenance, and enhanced fault detection, supporting maximum operational efficiency and safety.

Once operational, Ruwais LNG will have an export capacity of 9.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa)—more than doubling ADNOC Gas’ current LNG production. According to ADNOC, over a 12-month period the facility will produce enough LNG to power every home in a city the size of London for more than two years⁴.
